Artist: Abad, Pacita
The artwork of Pacita Abad, who studied art in the United States, is influenced by her Filipino heritage, as well as her global travels. Her work includes vibrant color and techniques that blur the line between high art and folk art. The work insists that fine art be viewed from a global perspective, acknowledging the contributions of non-western cultures. Pacita’s experimentation birthed her Trapunto technique, which created quiltlike volume in her often large scale canvases. These works could then be embellished with objects such as mirrors, beads, shells, and buttons. Over a 20 year period, Pacita produced the Masks and Spirits series which is based on her travels in Africa, Asia and South America. Her work is currently in collections and exhibitions worldwide.
