Artist: Ringgold, Faith

Ringgold subverts racial and gender assumptions with gentle humor, rather than stridency. In the early 1980s, her work became prevalently composed around a grid, based on the craft of quilt-making. In the 1990s, she maintained her focus on issues of slavery, racism, and sexism, but combined it with a painterly approach, repetition, and personal imagery.
