Barkley Hendricks was a contemporary painter who made revolutionary contributions to the genre of portraiture and conceptualism through his realist paintings of Black Americans. His works are a direct engagement with art history, the tradition of portraiture, and a confrontation of institutional portrayal of the black subject.
